Red-light District Zoning Laws

Red-light District Zoning Laws

The Supreme Court has upheld zoning laws that prohibit or restrict adult entertainment businesses. That is, municipalities have the right to enact laws which make it illegal to own or operate topless bars, peep shows, sex-oriented book stores, adult video stores, etc. Others may choose to restrict such establishments to a certain geographical location. Others have laws that do not allow adult entertainment establishments to be within a certain prescribed distance from houses of worship, schools, or other spiritual or educational institutions.
